More Than Monogamy, the new feature-length documentary from All the Birds Productions and Spark Erotic, takes a closer look at polyamory, ethical non-monogamy, open relationships and swinging without turning them into spectacle.

Rather than trying to convince viewers that non-monogamy is better, worse or somehow more evolved than monogamy, the documentary asks a much more interesting question: why do different relationship structures work for different people?

Non-monogamy is often reduced to provocative headlines, jealousy clichés or the assumption that commitment disappears the moment a relationship opens up. More Than Monogamy takes another route, exploring the communication, boundaries, consent and emotional honesty that can shape relationships beyond traditional monogamy.

The documentary brings together voices from relationship psychology, sexuality, education and media, including Dr. Justin Lehmiller, Dr. Liz Powell, Kevin A. Patterson, Kitty Chambliss, Billy Procida, Kenneth Play and Dirty Lola.
Together, they unpack some of the myths surrounding polyamory and ethical non-monogamy while discussing what these relationships can actually demand from the people living them.
And that may be where the film becomes most interesting.
Because removing exclusivity does not magically remove insecurity, communication problems or jealousy. If anything, relationships outside the conventional script can force people to talk more openly about expectations, desire, boundaries and what commitment actually means to them.
This is less a documentary about breaking relationship rules than one about questioning where those rules came from in the first place.
Who decided intimacy has to look one particular way? What happens when couples negotiate their own boundaries? And how do people distinguish freedom from simply avoiding responsibility?
More Than Monogamy does not pretend there is one universal answer.

Independent filmmakers looking beyond the usual clichés
The film is co-directed by Dillon Birdsall, founder of All the Birds Productions and director of V-Card: The Film, and Urvashi of Spark Erotic.
Spark Erotic has long occupied the space where independent filmmaking, erotic culture and relationship exploration intersect, while All the Birds Productions focuses on documentary and narrative storytelling built around unusual perspectives.
That combination gives More Than Monogamy a perspective that feels closer to the people and communities it discusses than the detached, sensationalist treatment the subject often receives.

More than a documentary about polyamory
Perhaps the most useful thing about More Than Monogamy is that you do not need to be polyamorous, a swinger or currently considering an open relationship to find something relevant in it.
Questions about jealousy, honesty, boundaries, attraction and commitment are hardly exclusive to non-monogamous people.
They are relationship questions.
And examining people who have deliberately stepped outside one of society’s most established relationship models can reveal a surprising amount about the assumptions the rest of us rarely question.
That makes More Than Monogamy less about rejecting monogamy and more about understanding the different ways people attempt to build intimacy.
